I wanted to start my postings with a movie a little more significant than this one, but, what are ya gonna do? So, Mirrors… overall, it was not as bad as I had expected. Lately, I have been very disappointed with the lack of quality in horror movies. This one was by no means great, but it was a step up.
So, to start, let’s talk about the cast. Kiefer Sutherland… awesome actor. The character he plays is your typical horror movie hero. He’s a guy with a troubled past, trying to get his life back on track when he is plagued with supernatural phenomena. Nobody believes him, they think it’s post traumatic stress, blah, blah, blah. This is the type of role that can very easily be and is most often, very overacted. However, Kiefer Sutherland (I can’t just use one of his names, he always has to be Kiefer Sutherland), plays it fantastically. He brings depth to the kind of character that can very easily fall flat. Now having said that, I’m going to have to make a complaint about his chemistry, or lack thereof, with the actress who played his wife. There was nothing there. She was a decent actress, just, not really right for the part she played.
Onto plot. The movie starts off strong. It’s got an interesting concept and I’ll be honest, it’s pretty creepy. It’s always creepiest when a movie takes an everyday thing and makes it scary (Psycho and the shower, hello??). Mirrors made creepy, it’s cool. So the plot takes a little while to build up, but once it does, you get hooked. It definitely keeps you interested.
Now having said that, I will say that for an original concept (with the mirrors), the movie is reminiscent of several other recent horror movies. It’s a mix of House on Haunted Hill (the remake), the Ring, and Silent Hill. In relation to the first two, the similarities are a good thing. In relation to Silent Hill, however, it resembles it in a bad way. You know how in Silent Hill, the movie ended leaving you wanting to know what the hell happens next, but you really don’t want a sequel? That’s how this one ends. Except worse, because the movie skips logical points of ending … those times at the end of the movie when you say to yourself “here’s where you wrap it up” and then another conflict is presented.
Overall, the movie is not bad. If you’re jonesing for a new horror flick, this one will tide you over until something worthy of The Sixth Sense praise comes along again.
